Athena is a young halfling approximately 3'11" tall.

  It was the year 1402, a little baby girl halfling was born to loving parents they named her Athena. She was born in a small Villiage outside mount Vesuvius, where many came to see her, and give best wishes to the parents. As she grew older her Father a great halfling himself told many stories to Athena about her Great Great Grandfather, and taught her the ways to fend, and live in the world of Alyria. There were many skills to learn, but she had one of the best teachers her Father. Her mother is a beautiful halfling, who taught Athena the ways of life. taught her the beauty of life, and what is given to us. Athena, raised on the goodness of heart soon left home to venture the world. Her time spent now in New Rigel, and learning all of Alyria has been quite an adventure.

The Day Vesuvius Awoke

This ancient beast has wrought havoc since the early beginnings of man. Having erupted violently in 5960 B.C. and 3580 B.C., Vesuvius was unknowingly one of most destructive volcanoes in all of Europe. Slyly remaining dormant during the growth of early Rome, the people of Campania thought of it more as beautiful scenery than a threat. They ignored the small tremors that were all too frequent and built settlements around the looming mountain. Not even a large earthquake in 63 A.D. was warning enough to the people living close to this great beast.

There had been tremors for many days previously, but on August 24, 79 A.D., it was more like an upheaval. Pressure built up inside Mount Vesuvius, and it could even be felt across the bay in Misenum. At 1:00 P.M., the energy is so great that the peak of Vesuvius explodes with six cubic kilometers of ash and rock. A large cloud of smoke rises high into the air and branches out like a tree. Pumice and ash fall onto the surrounding lands as the erption begins. The sky fills with ash, and the bright afternoon abruptly turns black. The first fiery surge comes at 11:30 P.M. and travels toward Herculaneum. A pyroclastic flow of super-hot gases and debris quickly follows. A second surge and flow occurs one hour later, and then the giant rests for the night, occasionally spewing out fire and rocks.

Vesuvius continues its attack the next morning at 5:30. In only three hours, there are four more surges and flows before the giant finally calms down again. By that time, every city around the bay of Naples was either evacuated or destroyed. Since then, Vesuvius has erupted several more times, but people keep coming back to the area. Currently, about 2,000,000 people live in the vicinity of the volcano, and it is due to erupt again in the next twenty-five years.

Special thanks:

Thank you, Vassago for making Materia Magica. It's made my eyes open wide to another life, and a world which we live. In fantasy, and real life.

"Nature herself, it seemed, would raise
A minster to her Maker's praise!
Not for a meaner use ascend
Her columns, or her arches bend;
Nor of a theme less solemn tells
That mighty surge that ebbs and swells,
And still between each awful pause,
From the high vault an answer draws,
In varied tone, prolonged and high,
That mocks the organ's melody;
Nor doth its entrance front in vain
To old Iona's holy fane,
That Nature's voice might seem to say,
Well hast thou done, frail child of clay!
Thy humble powers that stately shrine
Tasked high and hard- but witness mine!"
